Turkish Businesses Eye Opportunities as President Mnangagwa Takes SADC Chairmanship

As Zimbabwes President Emmerson Mnangagwa steps into the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Turkish businesses are presented with a significant opportunity to enhance their engagement with the region.

This leadership transition, occurring at the 44th Annual SADC Summit on August 17 in Harare, represents a key moment for fostering economic collaboration and growth. Mnangagwa will succeed Angolas President Joao Lourenco in guiding the 16-member bloc.

The summit will focus on the theme: "Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustainable Economic Growth and Development Towards Industrialised SADC."

A highlight of the summit is the 7th SADC Industrialisation Week (SIW), scheduled from July 28 to August 2, 2024, at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC). The event includes an investment conference, featuring a keynote address by Zimbabwes Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga, on July 29. Mnangagwa will officially open the SIW on July 31.

SIW serves as a critical platform for public-private collaboration, aimed at boosting intra-African trade, developing cross-border value chains, and uncovering investment opportunities in Southern Africa. It will bring together regional and global policymakers, investors, and industrialists to advance trade and investment in the region.

The main summit activities will be conducted in a hybrid format, with official and ministerial-level meetings beginning on August 8. Key side events include the SADC-Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) Investment Conference on August 14 at HICC and the SADC Public Lecture on August 15 at the University of Zimbabwe.

As Mnangagwa assumes the role of SADC chair, he aims to build upon his predecessors achievements and drive the bloc towards greater industrialization, utilizing his extensive experience in regional and global affairs, including socio-economic and political integration issues.
