Zambia Launches Womens Film Lab to Empower Female Filmmakers

The Zambian Women in Film and the Zambian Short Film Festival have introduced the Zambia Womens Film Lab, a program designed to empower 25 female filmmakers with essential skills and training to navigate the film industry effectively.



During the launch event, Jessy Chissy, the Founder of the Womens Film Club, emphasized that the skills acquired through this initiative will enable women to amplify their voices on critical issues that impact policy-making.



Mufaweli Mwambo, Vice President of the National Association of Media Arts (NAMA), highlighted that this training is crucial for encouraging women to assume leadership roles within the film sector and addressing the existing gaps in gender equality. She noted that the four-day workshop aims to uncover untapped talent among women and introduce diverse perspectives and ideas into the industry.



In addition, Adrian Chipindi, Director of the National Arts Council (NAC), shared that his organization is in the process of establishing a National Film Commission. This initiative aims to restructure the film sector and ensure the sustainability of talent within the industry. Mr. Chipindi also mentioned that NAC has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) to provide support for artists during retirement. This agreement, set to take effect in June, will include provisions for female artists on maternity leave, with a monthly contribution of K60.



The Zambia Womens Film Lab represents a significant step towards empowering women in the film industry, fostering leadership, and promoting gender equality while ensuring that artists are supported throughout their careers.
