Tributes are pouring in following the death of Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the founding president of Namibia, who passed away at the age of 95 in Windhoek after a short illness. Namibian President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba announced on Sunday that Nujoma had been hospitalized for medical treatment and observation, although he did not disclose the specific illness. Nujoma died just before midnight on February 8.

In his announcement, President Mbumba expressed that the foundations of the Republic of Namibia have been shaken by the loss of their founding father. He reflected on Nujoma's long and impactful life, highlighting his exceptional service to the Namibian people. Mbumba noted that Nujoma heroically led the nation during the darkest hours of the liberation struggle, culminating in Namibia's independence on March 21, 1990. He emphasized that Nujoma provided maximum leadership and inspired citizens to build a proud nation.

Mbumba called on the nation to find comfort in Nujoma's unmatched leadership and extraordinary contributions to the liberation struggle. He expressed gratitude to the medical staff who cared for Nujoma and thanked Namibians and friends of Namibia for their messages and prayers during this difficult time.

Condolences have streamed in from across the continent. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chairperson of the African Union Commission, celebrated Nujoma as an African liberation icon and a revolutionary leader. He described Nujoma as a figure of courage who remained steadfast in his vision for a free Namibia and a unified Africa, extending heartfelt condolences to Nujoma's family and the Namibian people.

Kenyan President William Ruto also expressed solidarity with Namibia, describing Nujoma as a selfless and visionary leader dedicated to the liberation and development of his country. A period of national mourning will be announced, and funeral arrangements will be made public soon.<
