The Bank of Namibia has successfully transitioned the Namibia Interbank Settlement System (Niss) to the ISO 20022 global payment messaging standard, a significant advancement in the nationals financial infrastructure.
Niss functions as Namibias real-time gross settlement system, essential for processing both individual and retail interbank payments. The Bank of Namibia (BoN) reported that from April 2024 to April 2025, the system handled over 97,000 transactions, with a total value surpassing N$1.2 trillion.
According to the acting director of strategic communication and international relations at BoN, Naufiku Hamunime, this transition reflects the banks dedication to aligning with international standards and best practices in financial system management. The ISO 20022 standard is recognized globally for financial payment messaging and is being adopted by financial institutions worldwide.
The adoption of ISO 20022 is expected to bring numerous benefits to Namibia's payment system. These include straight-through payment processing, enhanced processing capabilities, and improved liquidity management for financial institutions. Hamunime emphasized that the new standard will also bolster the ability of financial institutions to detect and prevent fraud. The rich data format provided by ISO 20022 facilitates better monitoring and detection of fraudulent activities, thereby reinforcing global efforts to combat illicit transactions.
This migration to ISO 20022 not only modernizes Namibia's payment infrastructure but also positions the country to better integrate with international financial systems. The enhanced capabilities of the Niss will likely lead to increased efficiency in payment processing, benefiting both consumers and businesses in Namibia.
Overall, the successful implementation of the ISO 20022 standard marks a pivotal moment for the Bank of Namibia and the countrys financial landscape, promising a more secure and efficient payment environment.
